Frequently asked questions

  • Who is eligible for Croatian Citizenship by descent?

You may be eligible for Croatian citizenship by descent through a parent, grandparent or earlier ancestor who emigrated from Croatia. Under Article 11 of the Croatian Citizenship Act, eligibility depends on your relationship to them and the circumstances of their move abroad. For this route, an emigrant is generally someone who left the territory that is now the Republic of Croatia before October 8, 1991, with the intention of living permanently abroad.

Their destination also matters, as moves within the same country or political union at the time, such as Yugoslavia or Austria-Hungary, may be treated as internal relocation rather than emigration. Your application therefore needs records that support the ancestor’s emigration and clearly connect each generation of your family, from that ancestor down to you.

Article 11 can also provide a pathway for spouses of eligible descendants, while children under 18 may be included in a parent’s application. This allows several family members to pursue citizenship through the same Croatian ancestor, although the exact route for each person depends on their relationship to the emigrant and their individual circumstances.

  • Is there a generational limit to apply for Croatian citizenship by descent?

No. There is currently no set generational limit to apply for Croatian citizenship by descent. The connection may go back several generations – what is important is that the family line can be clearly supported by records from one generation to the next.

As the number of generations increases, the paper trail becomes more important. Each generation needs to be clearly connected through records, and any differences in names, dates, or places should make sense across the family line. In practice, how far a claim can go often depends less on the number of generations and more on how clearly the family history can be documented.

  • Is there a language requirement to apply for Croatian citizenship by descent?

No. Croatian language proficiency is not required for citizenship by descent under Article 11. However, the application still needs to be fully prepared for review in Croatia, which means the supporting documents must be submitted in the required form and accompanied by certified Croatian translations where necessary.

Our team can help coordinate this process, from communicating with Croatian archives and registry offices to arranging the translations needed for documents issued abroad.

Even though speaking Croatian is not a requirement for this pathway, we still encourage applicants to learn the language if they can. It can be a meaningful way to deepen the connection to Croatia, understand more of the culture, and feel closer to the heritage behind the citizenship journey.

  • How long does it take to obtain Croatian citizenship by descent?

The estimated wait for Croatian citizenship by descent is around two to three years after submitting an application. Where you apply and how much review your case requires can affect this timeline, along with the authorities’ workload and requests for further documents.

Before submission, genealogical research may take two months or longer, depending on the information available. This includes locating your ancestor’s Croatian birth record and obtaining their birth certificate. Preparing the application can then take around four additional months, depending on where you apply and how quickly archives and registry offices provide the remaining records.

  • Where do I need to apply for Croatian citizenship?

Applicants living outside Croatia need to submit their citizenship applications at embassy or consulate of the Republic of Croatia responsible for their jurisdiction.

Salona Consulting can help you prepare and organize the required forms, supporting documents, translations, and certifications before your appointment. We also explain what is being submitted and what to expect during the appointment, so you apply for citizenship well prepared and confident.

  • Can Salona Consulting guarantee that my citizenship application will be approved?

No. The final decision always belongs to the Croatian authorities, so approval is the sole responsibility of Croatia’s government. Salona Consulting’s role is to prepare the strongest possible application by making sure the family connection is clearly documented, the records are consistent, and the file is complete and carefully prepared before submission.

  • Does Salona Consulting work with clients worldwide?

Yes. Salona Consulting works with clients living around the world, including families in the United States, Brazil, Australia, New Zealand, Latin America, Europe, and beyond. Much of the research, document preparation, and citizenship support can be coordinated remotely, allowing clients to move through the process from abroad.

  • Can Salona Consulting continue supporting me after my citizenship application is approved?

Yes. Salona Consulting can continue supporting the administrative steps that come after the citizenship is approved. This may include registering the new citizenship and other vital records in Croatia, obtaining Croatian certificates, and preparing for a Croatian passport or national ID application.

Citizenship approval is an important milestone, but it is not always the end of the administrative journey, so support can continue into the next stages whenever needed.
